There are two major dewormers which each provide specific coverages.
#1 is Pyrantel Pamoate which needs to be dosed out by weight as shown below for one day. We can provide Pyrantel Paomate to our fosters here at Kitty Corner. Exact weight of the kitty is required for proper dosage.
Pyrantel (Nemex, Strongid) is effective against roundworms and hookworms, and is safe for young kittens and pregnant queens. It should be given at intake to all cats and kittens over 4 weeks, and kittens should continue to receive it every 2 weeks until 16 weeks of age.
Pyrantel Pamoate is dosed out at 0.1 ml per lb as follows:
- 0.5 lb kitten gets 0.05 ml
- 1.0 lb kitten gets 0.1 ml
- 1.5 lb kitten gets 0.15 ml
- 2.0 lb kitten gets 0.2 ml
- 2.5 lb kitten gets 0.25 ml
- 3.0 lb kitten gets 0.3 ml
#2 is Panacur/Fenbendazole which needs to be dosed out by weight as shown below for 3-5 days. We can also supply this to our fosters at Kitty Corner. It can also be purchased at Tractor Supply and Amazon. Exact weight of the kitty is required for proper dosage.
Fenbendazole (Panacur®) – effective against roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, some tapeworms (Taenia) and Giardia. Must be given for at least 3 consecutive days in order to effectively treat whipworms and tapeworms, and 5 days for Giardia. Panacur is considered safe in pregnant and lactating queens and kittens.
If you are using the 10% paste or 10% liquid (100 mg/ml), take the weight of the cat/kitten and dose out at 0.2ml per pound of body weight as follows.
- 0.5 lb kitten gets 0.1 ml
- 1.0 lb kitten gets 0.2 ml
- 1.5 lb kitten gets 0.3 ml
- 2.0 lb kitten gets 0.4 ml
- 2.5 lb kitten gets 0.5 ml
- 3.0 lb kitten gets 0.6 ml
